Microdermabrasion

Woman Under Going Microdermabrasion Treatment

Microdermabrasion is the latest scientific method of treatment for damaged skin. Micronized (very fine) crystals derived from minerals are used to remove dead and flaking skin cells. In the hands of an experienced esthetician, an instrument directs this stream of crystals onto the skin. As the skin cells are abraded, a small vacuum removes the crystals along with the upper, outermost layer of the skin. This results in the production of collagen and new skin cells.

The benefits of microdermabrasion
Microdermabrasion has been found to improve many unsightly surface conditions that have previously required several different treatments. As a result, microdermabrasion requires less time and less discomfort. Recovery time is rapid and any normal activities can be resumed immediately. Microdermabrasion is safe and effective on most parts of the body and if desired can be used in conjunction with other cosmetic procedures as well. Some skin improvements include:

  • The removal and reduction of age spots
  • Diminishing of wrinkles and fine lines
  • Removal of blackheads and whiteheads
  • Reduction of acne scars
  • Improvement of dull and rough skin
  • Fresher, younger looking skin.

The Microdermabrasion procedure has been performed successfully on people of all skin types. The average treatment is usually completed in fifteen minutes to a half hour. Microdermabrasion treatments can be repeated every 10 days, indefinitely. The number of treatments varies depending on the skin problem and results desired.

What preparation may be needed before treatments?
No preparation is necessary, but cessation of skin treatments such as tanning, chemical peels, collagen injections, etc. for a two-week period prior to microdermabrasion treatments is advised.

What results can one expect from Microdermabrasion?

Depending on severity of the skin issue you are trying to fix, your skin may show noticeable improvement.  Wrinkles, age spots and fine lines diminish over time with additional treatments as the skin takes on a brighter more radiant glow. Acne scars are less noticeable and the skin looks generally fresher. Some special cleansers and moisturizers may be recommended due to a loss of moisture during the procedure. Some patients may experience some redness as well as tightening of the skin, similar to mild sunburn. This should only last for a short period of time and should not create discomfort. There have been no side effects associated with the treatment and healing time is usually a few days.
